For fans of baseball and ice cream it has been a long wait, but the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday announced the return of a concession stand staple – the Sea Dogs Biscuit.

The team tweeted photographs Thursday of the ice cream sandwich – a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream packed between two soft chocolate chip cookies. “Sea Dogs Biscuits are back!” the tweet stated.

Sea Dogs spokesman Chris Cameron confirmed that the Sea Dog Biscuit will be available on Opening Day, April 6, and for the rest of the 2023 season.

The Sea Dogs Biscuit produced by Giffords HomeMaine Ice Cream hasn’t been sold at Hadlock Field since 2021, when the Sea Dogs organization announced it had entered into a contract with Gifford’s to supply the treat. Prior to that, they were made by Shain’s of Maine.

But in 2022, the original Giffords biscuit was replaced when the ice cream maker experienced supply chain issues. In its place, the team sold a Blue Bunny ice cream sandwich through a food vendor and another generic variety from a local distributor. The substitutes were sold under the Sea Dogs Biscuit name and for the same $4 price as the official version.

Cameron said there will be no substitutes sold this season.Advertisement

“Nothing beats the original Sea Dogs Biscuit. It’s something a lot of fans have expressed interest in,” Cameron said when asked if fans liked the replacements sold last year.

A Feb. 2 fire that caused significant damage to the Gifford’s plant in Skowhegan will not affect availability, according to Cameron.

“There will be plenty of biscuits available,” he said. The first shipment of sandwiches arrived Thursday.

The Portland Sea Dogs are scheduled to open their 2023 season on April 6 when they host the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (a New York Mets affiliate). The Sea Dogs are the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
